The verifiability of porosity and hardness measurements on thermally sprayed coatings frequently constitutes a problem. In addition to external influences (e.g. the subjective perception of the person taking the measurements or various preparation methods), this may be attributed to inhomogeneities in the structures of the coatings. This article presents work which aimed to decrease the variability, i.e. the fluctuations in the measured results of both the important coating criteria. The attainment of this objective entailed the development of procedures and the elaboration of measuring instructions whose applicability and benefits were qualified in cooperative tests.
