Prof. Nicolaie Markocsan

Nicolaie Markocsan is Associate Professor in Production Technology at University West. He conducts his research at the Production Technology Centre where he conducts research on thermal spraying. Nicolaie Markocsan and his colleagues are working on improving the thermally sprayed layers used today and also on developing new types. The purpose is to improve their functional properties by controlling the coating microstructure. Single layer as well as multilayered coating systems are of interest in order to develop coatings functional properties such as heat insulation, or wear and corrosion resistance. Nicolaie Markocsan’s research also involves measurement and evaluation of the properties of the thermally sprayed layers. The goal is to develop non-contact methods for establishing material properties. Another of Nicolaie Markocsan and his colleagues’ research interests is the usage of thermal spraying, not to surface coat components, but to repair them or produce individual components. This involves expensive components in aeroplane engines or gas turbines. The spraying methods used here can be HVOF, High Velocity Oxygen Fuel Spraying, or Cold Spraying. Nicolaie Markocsan is also teaching manufacturing processes, mechanical engineering and material science at several of the university programs. He joined University West in 2003 directly upon finishing his doctoral thesis. His doctoral thesis Near-Net-Shape Forming by Thermal Spraying involves a specific manufacturing method which utilizes thermal spraying.
