Qualification of laser line triangulation foroptical inline coating thickness measurement onplasma-sprayed ceramic and metal coatings

Specialist Article

Authors: Dr.-Ing. Michél Hauer, Dr.-Ing. (SFI) Richard Banaschik, Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Knuth-Michael Henkel

A coating composite consisting of plasma-sprayed ceramic and metal coatings is investigated in this article. One decisive parameter for a high and constant quality in this application is a uniform coating thickness. This should be established reliably and, in the future, already in the coating process if at all possible in order to reduce the throughput times on the basis of thickness fluctuations inherent in the process, e.g. due to nozzle wear. For this purpose, the suitability of laser line triangulation (LLT) is checked in comparison with conventional testing methods.
