Thomas Klassen studied Physics at Dortmund University and received his Ph.D. in Engineering from the...Thomas Klassen studied Physics at Dortmund University and received his Ph.D. in Engineering from the Technical University Hamburg-Harburg in 1993. He spent two years at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a postdoc researcher, before he returned to Germany, where he was head of the Department of Powder and Nano Technology at the National GKSS Research Center in Geesthacht. In 2005, he finished his habilitation thesis entitled "Nanocrystalline Materials: Mechnanisms, Properties, and Potential Applications". Since 2005, he holds the position of full professor in the Faculty of Engineering at the Helmut Schmidt University, University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg, Germany, heading the Institute of Materials Technology with research focus on cold spraying. In 2010, he additionally was appointed as Director of the Institute for Materials Technology at Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht - Centre for Materials and Coastal Research with research focus on renewable energies, in particular hydrogen technology.
