Potentials of thermally sprayed sliding bearings forhighly loaded bearing positions

Peer-reviewed Papers

Authors: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Kirsten Bobzin, Dipl.-Ing. Tim Königstein, Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Wietheger

Thermal spraying allows the production of innovative coatings for highly loaded hydrodynamic bearings that cannot be produced by melting metallurgy. In this study, different coating concepts, which consist of a metallic base with integrated solid lubricants, are developed and tribologically tested. The solid lubricants can be released in critical system conditions and serve to reduce the friction within the bearing. Depending on the selected material combination, thermally sprayed coatings can achieve both lower wear rates and lower coefficients of friction compared to conventionally produced bearings.
